Senior Team Midland League Division 1 - 2007

Warwick vs Parogon (23rd Sept 2007) by Jonathan Fleet

Warwick hosted Parogon (Newcastle under Lyme) for the final game in the Midland league season, needing a good win to secure their place in Division one for 2007/08.

Warwick started well, Matt Wardle scored after only 20 seconds profiting from a mix up in Parogon's goal. Parogon equalized after 2 minutes, but Wardle was on hand again to flick in a loose ball 15 seconds later to put Warwick back in the lead. Bob Jeys scored with a lob half way through the quarter, and Warwick were 2 goals up. Parogon came back with a long range shot, and in the last minute first Lee Jeys and then Bob Jeys were excluded, and Parogon scored twice to end the quarter one ahead.

Norman Stephens was excluded at the start of the second quarter, and Parogon scored again. More loose marking let Parogan in with another long range effort and then Warwick conceded 2 more exclusions, however managed to defend both of these. With 2 minutes of the quarter to go Warwick started to have some more success, first a goal from Wardle and then 2 from Stephens left the game finely poised 6-7 at half time.

Parogan scored first in the third quarter, and despite Warwick forcing 2 exclusions from Parogon, there were no more goals in the quarter, so Warwick went into the final quarter 2 goals down. Parogan played a tight game of possession in the final quarter, and Warwick grew more frustrated as the clock ticked down. Jonathan Fleet was excluded half way through and Parogan scored again. Warwick let in another goal before Scott Haystead pulled one back for Warwick, but with 40 seconds left on the clock, Warwick had run out of time. The final score was 7-10 to Parogon.

The result means Warwick will be back in the second division next season, but will be a stronger side for the experience. Warwick have the ability to compete in the first division but have lacked the confidence to take their opportunities when they were presented. If Warwick had won the first game of the season (lost 10-12 to South Derbyshire) it could all have been so different.

Warwick will perform strongly in the second division again, and will be looking for promotion, and hopefully will be able to make it stick this time.

Training continues through the winter, with odd friendly games, and Warwick are always looking for new players of all ages to come and join the club.
