Senior Team
Midland
League
Division 1 -
2007
Warwick
v Nottingham
(5 Sept
2007) by Jonathan Fleet
Warwick
Water Polo
came into
the 2007
season after
winning the
second
division of
the Midland
League, and
so promotion
to the top
division,
and after
making it to
the
Warwickshire
cup final
which they
lost to
Solihull ,
knowing that
they would
have to step
up their
game to
survive in
the First
Division.
It has been
a long hard
season for
Warwick so
far, with
some
non-availability
of key
players
during the
season not
helping the
campaign.
Warwick have
so far
failed to
win a match
in the First
Division,
but have
come close a
couple of
times.
Playing away
to fellow
strugglers
Nottingham
on
Wednesday,
Warwick knew
it was a
must win
game to make
survival in
the First
Division
assured. The
game started
with
Nottingham
winning the
ball, but
Warwick
defending
the first
attack, on
the counter
Matt Wardle
scored to
put Warwick
on the
board.
Warwick
survived an
exclusion
foul on
Scott Haystead,
however a
minute later
Nottingham
levelled the
scores.
Nottingham
scored again
before
Duncan
Holland
converted a
man up at
the back
post to
level the
game again.
A goal from
Nottingham
and one from
Norman
Stephens
ended he
quarter 3-3.
Warwick
conceded
first in the
second
quarter but
came back
well to go
into a 6-4
lead, but
seemed to
get careless
after that
leaving
Nottingham
players free
to take long
shots, and
so the game
was
eventually
left at 8-6
to
Nottingham
at half
time.
Warwick knew
the game was
there for
the winning,
and pulled
it back to
8-8 in the
3rd quarter
before again
letting
Nottingham
score 3
times to
leave the
game 11-8 to
Nottingham
going into
the last
quarter.
Nottingham
seemed to
start making
their
experience
of playing
the narrow
pool start
to count and
crowded
Warwick out,
and scored 4
goals with
only one in
reply from
Warwick ,
meaning that
Warwick lost
15-9 and
still have
not won a
game this
season.
Warwick have
3 games to
go , so all
is not yet
lost, and 2
wins will
see them
survive,
however it
will be a
big
challenge
for the team
to find the
self belief
and control
to turn
their
winning
potential in
games to a
final
result.
The next
home game is
on Sunday
9th at
Warwick
pool, 5pm ,
and the
final home
game of the
season is on
the 23rd
September at
Warwick
school, 5pm
.
