The Warwickshire Cup – 2008

Warwick vs Camp Hill (A) 7 - 7 (DRAW) (March 2008) by Jonathan Fleet

Warwick traveled to Camp Hill Edwardians for the final game of the Warwickshire cup competition. Warwick would progress into the final of the competition for the second year with a good result, and despite the absence of 4 first team players started well, John Dyer opening the scoring after 2 minutes. Warwick won an exclusion and eventually Matt Wardle converted the advantage. With 2 minutes to go in the first quarter John Dyer was excluded, but Warwick defended well. Camp Hill broke through with 30 seconds to go to get one goal back however.

The second quarter was end to end until Warwick eventually concede another major foul, and Camp Hill scored, and a minute later they scored again to go into the lead, and that is how the game was set at half time, 3-2 to Camp Hill.

Warwick started the 3rd quarter still a man down and Camp Hill won the ball at the swim off. After a Time Out they converted the advantage to go 2 goals ahead. Warwick have proved this season that they are not scared of a fight back, and late into the 3rd quarter it started. Matt Wardle scored, and a brace within a minute from John Dyer put Warwick back into the lead 4-5 going into the final quarter.

Camp Hill scored first and then another exclusion foul from Duncan Holland let Camp Hill score to go into the lead again. Camp Hill slowed the game down now trying to ride out the remainder of the quarter, but Warwick kept chasing the ball, and eventually forced an exclusion foul from Camp Hill. Warwick took their chance and Adam Streeter scored to level the game. 30 seconds later Camp Hill again found space and scored. Warwick restarted and pressed forward, looking for the equalizer, and Camp Hills desperate defending conceded a penalty. Matt Wardle scored to level the match again with 45 seconds to go. Camp Hill pressed forward with their last attack, but a good save from mark Baxter thwarted their final effort. Jonathan Fleet called a time out with Warwick in possession and 22 seconds left on the clock. Warwick kept possession and the match ended level at 7 a piece.

The result puts Warwick in the final, probably facing Boldmere. This will be the first time in 8 years Solihull will not have won this trophy, and it will be a real feather in Warwick cap if they can win this for the first time in their history. Date and venue of the final have still to be set.
